Balance Fitness and Food?

I have questions for all of you.  I am stumped.

Now that I have a trainer, I am exercising more than ever.  I have done almost 2x's the amount of physical activity calories in the last couple of weeks than I did before.  I have not changed my eating plan at all, still the 1200-1600 calories per day.  So, one would think that I would be peeling off 2x's the amount of weight.  Not really happening that way.

What does that mean?  Isn't this thing supposed to be about math?  Am I breaking my own a$$ for no reason?  Maybe I should slow down my sweaty torment, especially if it isn't going to make much of a difference?  Now, don't get me wrong, I want to do my C25K.  I want to reach that goal, but I do want to see a difference in the numbers.  I will weigh in and do some measurements on Monday.  I hope I see some evidence.  This all being said, I should say that my clothes are definitely feeling better and I do feel fitter.  But how do you find the sweet spot?  Where is that balance coming from?

  1. Well, I would say that better-fitting clothes and feeling fitter are pretty sweet! Good luck with the measurements tomorrow!

  2. Often times when you really ramp up the exercise I've found that people don't always lose in proportion to the amount of exercise. I think the fact that you are experiencing changes in your body is a great sign. The scale is a fickle companion, but will eventually move in the direction that you want it too. Just don't give up!

    Take care!

  4. Exercise has it's own pay off as it releases stress relieving and feel good hormones in our bodies. It should be a lifestyle thing forever.

  6. In my experience, I've found that the days I do heavy exercising or activity, that I need to ramp up my calories. Your body is doing more, and needs more energy. It doesn't make sense, but it works, Weight watchers calculates "Activity Points" based on your level, that give you extra points to be consumed that day.

  7. I would suggest asking your trainer. I am with Amy though. I believe that you are building muscle which would then equate to a lower loss and that fact you are leaner.

  8. i think your clothes fitting loser is the key, not the stupid scale. all your working out is building muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. stick with what you are doing and it will show up on the scale eventually. don't let that damn number define you! feeling good, knowing you are doing awesome stuff for your health and your clothes fitting better are the goods.

  9. PATIENCE. I can tell you from my own personal experience working out with a trainer for 4 months it took me until the 3rd month to lose more inches than I did the first two months combined. And I started out with over 100 lbs to lose. I have lost about 30 lbs so far (going on 6 months) so not everyone will lose instantly. I know everyone says it's a calculation between cals in and cals out, but there's more to it IMO. Like life. Life happens. Stress happens. Quality of food affects it. I got to a point during training where I was at a standstill for almost a month so we UPPED my cal intake so that sometimes needs to happen. Just hang with it and if your clothes are looser it's working girl! :)

  10. Don't give up!! My scale is not really moving much and I'm on week 4! I can tell you my butt is 3 inches higher and my belly no longer hangs below my shirt. It really does work! Even if the scale isn't cooperating, things are shifting around and I'm liking what I see!! Cheering you on fellow couch to 5k-er!

  11. It means that your body is resisting a little bit. Give yourself another two weeks to adjust. If you don't find the scale moving, talk to your trainer (or nutritionist?) about adjustments you can make to your diet that will help the scale get moving again!

I'm sure that even though you aren't losing pounds, you are probably losing inches! :o)

  12. If you figure out the mysteries of the scale, you can write a book and become a millionaire. :-)

  13. You're doing great. You just have to convince yourself to stay the course in the hard times.
